The sport’s biggest club teams, including Chelsea and Everton, will miss out on hosting the World Cup in Russia this summer despite having won the last five major competitions.
The Russian government banned the Russian Football Union (RFU) from bidding for the 2022 tournament, which could mean Chelsea and the Premier League clubs will miss the tournament in Russia if the RFU is not invited.
Russia’s top three teams have been denied entry to Russia and it has been widely claimed that the RFUs decision will be a setback for the global sport.
Chelsea and Everton are both ranked among the top three clubs in the world in terms of domestic and international results, while Arsenal are currently fourth and Real Madrid sixth.
However, the Premier Leagues governing body, the Football Association, has said that it is not possible for clubs from Russia to play at the tournament.
This means the Premier and Football League will not be invited to Russia.
The FA, which has a record of failing to host the tournament since the 1990s, will now have to look at what other options it has available.
Real Madrid have said they will not take part in the tournament if they are not invited, while Bayern Munich have said that they will be looking to join the competition if they do not receive an invitation.
The Premier League, who have won the trophy in 2018, have not yet announced their plans for 2022.
